Story Highlights -- In the depths of the waters of a backwoods
pond lived a large fish known as Cat, and he was a legend...no
fisherman could catch him, although many tried. Not far away
lived a big Maine Coon Cat named Fish, and his dream was to do
what seemed impossible ... catch Cat. He knew the fishing would
not be easy. Their meeting and battle was something that both
knew would eventually happen, but the outcome is something that
neither could imagine.
Meet the sage of the woods, She-Crow, in the land of dragonflies,
wood ducks, and red-winged black birds. Climb up in the porch
swing, breathe in deeply, and settle in for this artfully woven
10-pages of adventure spun by Thornton.
Reading With Children -- Some Questions:
A Cat Named Fish and a Fish Named Cat [ISBN 0978825209]
by H Wayne Thornton
Overview -- This is a children's fictional short story with talking
animals -- a folktale for children. One of the two lead characters
in the story is a Maine Coon Cat named Fish. The other is a large
catfish named Cat who speaks in a deep burbly voice.
The bedrock principle of this tale is learning the right thing to do;
and then doing the right thing. The cat learns this lesson well in a
battle with the catfish. It is a story of perseverance against tough
odds; and learning to change and grow with the experiences of life.
Illustrations and Words -- Their are a few different and neat
words in this story, like caterwaul and burbly. The play on words
comes through in a ditty sung by red-wing blackbirds. With the
unusual words and vivid illustrations, children will readily get into
the flow of the story. The vivid silhouette color illustrations of the
two lead characters lend to the drama. Additional illustrations,
such as two red-winged blackbirds on cattails next to a backwoods
pond, provide a strong visual connection as the tale unfolds.
